#Remembering The Time When Luffy Got Surprisingly Relatable -BB

Admittedly, it’s sometimes a little hard to relate to anime heroes when they’re in a high stakes battle for the fate of the world. Determination? I get that. Willpower in the face of an obstacle? Sure. Going past your limits and achieving victory? I’ve been there and it’s pretty great. But actually, like, taking on a monstrous enemy that wants to destroy me with laser blasts? It’s hard to find the exact metaphor for that, and I’d sound like a terrible Sunday School leader if I said „And getting a good score on my SATs was the REAL Orochimaru in my life.“

That’s why it’s nice to see an anime character suddenly break out of their fighting spirit trance in the middle of a battle and react in a way that I can totally empathize with. And my favorite example of that is probably when Luffy does it in his duel with Katakuri in the Whole Cake Island arc of One Piece. The fight has gone on for twenty episodes so far, and with the exception of a few brief moments, it’s mostly consisted of Luffy getting the rubber kicked out of him. Even in his Fourth Gear SnakeMan form, the fight with Katakuri is barely even.

And so Luffy finds himself at the bottom of a hole that was made when Katakuri literally beat him into the ground, and emerging from the rubble, he suddenly does one of the most relatable things in the history of the series:

He complains. It’s the climactic battle of the arc and Luffy just has to get it out there that, actually, being pummeled and not being able to take a break or eat a snack sucks. And that’s not a side of shonen heroes that we get to see very often. It reminds me of Yu Yu Hakusho when Yusuke got frustrated with the fact that more and more powerful villains kept coming out of nowhere and it never seemed to end. But here it’s actually kind of funny, rather than the existential plea of a battle manga character to just be able to feel relief every once in a while.

And honestly, a lot of us would probably act the same way. Fights in One Piece can be these long, epic affairs, but every once in a while, you imagine that the participants would get tired of punching and yelling about their dreams and just beg to be able to take a nap or get a shower. So when Luffy just yells about how tired he is, I feel ya, man.
